Lean & Agile

Lean and Agile is the philosophy and toolkit to continuously enhance the customer value of your products, to improve the way you make them and to develop your team members, taking a long term view.

Philosophy

Lean management is the philosophy developed over the last 50 years within the Toyota Motor Corporation. Lean is the management philosophy which allowed the company to develop from a small family business, making automatic looms, to the most important manufacturing company in the world -broadly considered as best in class in quality, delivery, flexibility and cost efficiency. Early on in their development, Toyota was facing loads of superfluous personnel, thanks to all sorts of efficiency programs. Toyota understood that these experienced people, greatly skilled in problem solving and process improvement, are extremely valuable to the company. The cost of developing skilled personnel are great, specially when you want to engage them in process improvement - as Toyota did and does.

So, the company decided to accelerate their process for product development too: Delivering more new products faster, would allow the company to maintain their personnel and offer them positions on new production lines. Today, Toyota’s development process delivers more new products faster than anyone else.

Since the end of the millennium, other companies and sectors started to learn from Toyota’s product development process, developing applications such as lean construction, Lean Project Management and lean software development. Lean software development soon evolved into Extreme Programming, Scrum and now Lean and Agile Project Management.
